How the Brick Calculator works
The Brick Calculator helps homeowners, contractors, and DIY builders quickly determine how many bricks are needed to complete a wall of any size, automatically factoring in a waste allowance so you never fall short mid-project. It's an essential planning tool for any masonry or brickwork project, from garden walls to full building facades.
At its core, the calculator works by dividing the total wall surface area by the face area of a single brick, including the mortar joint. A standard US modular brick measures 3⅝ × 2¼ × 7⅝ inches with a ⅜-inch mortar joint, giving a face dimension of roughly 2⅝ × 8 inches per brick in the wall. The calculator uses these dimensions to establish how many brick courses (rows) and columns fit within your wall's height and width respectively, arriving at a raw brick count before any adjustments.
Mortar joint thickness is a critical variable that many first-time builders overlook. Even a small change—say, going from a ⅜-inch to a ½-inch joint—meaningfully reduces the number of bricks needed per square foot because each joint takes up more space. Most American masonry work uses a ⅜-inch joint, while older or more rustic styles may use ½-inch or thicker. If you're matching existing brickwork, measure an existing joint before using the calculator to ensure your estimate aligns with the actual build.
Waste allowance is where many DIY estimates go wrong. Bricks must be cut to fit around corners, windows, doors, and electrical conduits, and some will crack during transport or laying. A standard waste factor of 5–10% is typical for straightforward rectangular walls, while more complex patterns like herringbone or diagonal running bond can waste 15–20% or more. The calculator applies your chosen waste percentage on top of the raw brick count so that the final number already accounts for breakage and cuts—ordering exactly what the calculator shows means you should have enough without a costly second delivery.
Wall thickness (the number of wythes, or layers of brick) also affects total brick count significantly. A single-wythe wall uses roughly 6.75 modular bricks per square foot of face area, while a double-wythe wall doubles that figure. Structural walls, retaining walls, and many exterior building walls require multiple wythes for strength and insulation. Be sure to input the correct wall thickness when prompted, and remember that header bricks (bricks laid perpendicular to tie wythes together) add to the total count in multi-wythe construction.
Formula
Raw Brick Count = Wall Area ÷ Individual Brick Face Area (including mortar joint) Final Brick Count = Raw Brick Count × (1 + Waste Percentage / 100) Brick Face Area = (Brick Height + Mortar Joint) × (Brick Length + Mortar Joint)
Pro tips
- Always add at least 10% waste for any wall with corners, openings, or a decorative bond pattern—even experienced masons break and miscut bricks, and a second delivery is nearly always more expensive than the extra bricks.
- Before entering dimensions, confirm the brick size being used: non-modular, jumbo, or reclaimed bricks vary significantly in face area and will throw off any estimate based on standard modular dimensions.
- For projects matching existing brickwork, measure the actual mortar joint on the existing wall with a tape measure rather than assuming a standard ⅜-inch joint—older structures commonly used ½-inch or even ¾-inch joints.
- Round your final brick order up to the nearest full pallet or layer; bricks ordered individually later will often cost more per unit and may come from a different production batch with a slightly different color.
- If your wall includes openings like windows or doors, subtract those areas from the total wall area before calculating—but keep any waste from cut bricks near those openings in mind when setting your waste percentage.
Key terms
- Wythe
- — A single vertical layer of bricks in a wall; a double-wythe wall has two parallel brick layers, which roughly doubles the brick requirement.
- Mortar Joint
- — The layer of mortar between individual bricks that bonds them together; joint thickness (typically ⅜ to ½ inch) affects both the aesthetics and the total brick count per square foot.
- Waste Allowance
- — An extra percentage of bricks added to the calculated count to cover cuts, breakage, and off-cuts, typically 5–10% for simple walls and up to 20% for complex patterns.
- Running Bond
- — The most common brick-laying pattern where each brick is offset by half a brick length from the course below, producing a staggered, structurally strong appearance.
- Course
- — A single horizontal row of bricks in a wall; the number of courses is determined by dividing the total wall height by the combined height of one brick plus one mortar joint.
- Modular Brick
- — The standard US brick size (3⅝ × 2¼ × 7⅝ inches) designed so that brick dimensions plus mortar joints align to whole-number increments, simplifying layout and estimation.
