How the Tip & Bill Splitter works
The Tip & Bill Splitter calculator helps you total a restaurant bill from individual item prices, apply the correct tip and tax, and divide the final amount fairly among your group — whether you're splitting evenly or by what each person ordered.
At its core, this calculator takes a list of item prices and sums them into a pre-tax subtotal. From there, it applies a sales tax percentage (which varies by state and locality in the US, typically ranging from 0% in Oregon to over 10% in some cities) to produce a taxed total. The tip is then calculated on top of the pre-tax subtotal — not the taxed amount — which is the industry-standard approach and ensures you're rewarding the server fairly without inflating gratuity with government tax.
Tip percentage selection is one of the most misunderstood parts of a restaurant bill. In the US, 15% has historically been the baseline for adequate service, while 18–20% is now considered standard, and 25% or more reflects exceptional service. Many people mistakenly tip on the post-tax total, effectively over-tipping by the tax margin. This calculator applies the tip to the pre-tax subtotal by default, matching the method recommended by etiquette experts and used by most point-of-sale systems.
When splitting a bill among multiple diners, there are two main approaches: an even split, where the total (including tip and tax) is divided equally by the number of people, and an itemized split, where each person pays only for what they ordered plus a proportional share of tax and tip. The even split is simpler and works well for groups of similar spenders, while the itemized or 'split by item' method is fairer when orders vary significantly in price — for example, when one diner orders a steak and wine while another orders a salad and water.
A common mistake when splitting bills manually is forgetting to include the tip and tax before dividing, which leaves the group short and creates an awkward shortfall at the table. Another pitfall is rounding each person's share down independently, which can add up to a dollar or more less than the actual total owed. This calculator rounds intelligently so the sum of all shares always equals the true total, preventing the group from being caught short on the final payment.
Formula
Subtotal = Sum of all item prices | Tax Amount = Subtotal × (Tax Rate / 100) | Tip Amount = Subtotal × (Tip Rate / 100) | Grand Total = Subtotal + Tax Amount + Tip Amount | Per Person (even split) = Grand Total / Number of People
Pro tips
- Always tip on the pre-tax subtotal, not the grand total — tipping on the taxed amount effectively inflates your gratuity by the tax rate, which in high-tax cities can mean overpaying by 1–2% or more.
- If your group has big spenders and light eaters, use the 'split by item' method rather than an even split — it avoids resentment and ensures everyone pays a genuinely fair share of the bill.
- For large parties (6 or more), many US restaurants automatically add an 18–20% service charge listed as 'automatic gratuity' — always check your bill before adding an additional tip on top of it.
- When the bill total results in an odd per-person amount, have one person cover the rounding difference rather than each person rounding down, which consistently leaves the group short on cash payments.
- If you're in a country where tipping culture differs (e.g., Japan, where tipping can be considered rude, or Australia, where a 10% tip is generous), skip or reduce the tip percentage — this calculator works globally by simply setting the tip rate to 0%.
