Fraction to Decimal

At its core, converting a fraction to a decimal is a division problem: the numerator (top number) is divided by the denominator (bottom number). For example, the fraction 3/4 means '3 divided by 4,' which equals 0.75. Not all fractions produce neat, terminating decimals. Some fractions yield repeating decimals — infinite sequences of digits that cycle in a pattern. Whether a fraction terminates or repeats depends entirely on the denominator: if the denominator's only prime factors are 2 and 5, the decimal terminates. A common mistake when converting fractions is confusing the numerator and denominator and performing the division backwards — dividing the bottom number by the top. Always remember: numerator ÷ denominator. Another frequent error occurs with mixed numbers (e.g., 2 3/4). To convert a mixed number, you must first convert it to an improper fraction (2 3/4 becomes 11/4) before dividing, or simply add the whole number to the decimal equivalent of the fractional part (0.75 + 2 = 2.75). Skipping this step leads to incorrect results.

The percent conversion is a natural extension: once you have the decimal, multiplying by 100 shifts the decimal point two places to the right. This relationship — fraction, decimal, and percent as three representations of the same value — is foundational in finance, cooking, science, and everyday problem-solving. For example, a discount of 3/8 is the same as 0.375 or 37.5%, and knowing all three forms lets you work fluently in whichever context demands it.
